Floating & Open-Tread Stair Nosing — Custom Fabrication Tampa Bay

Floating and open-tread staircases have no risers — each step is visible from multiple angles. A standard nose piece isn't enough. This kit wraps all exposed edges with a custom fabricated nosing or stair block cut from your flooring material.

Why floating stairs need a different approach

On a floating or open-tread staircase, the tread is visible from the front, both sides, and sometimes the bottom. A nose piece that wraps only the front edge leaves the rest of the tread visually unfinished. FIR fabricates a fully-wrapped nosing or stair block that covers all exposed surfaces — front face, both returns, and in some cases the underside edge — for a fully finished architectural result.

  • Full-wrap nosing or stair block (all exposed edges covered)
  • Fabricated from your actual flooring planks
  • On-site measurement visit required before fabrication
  • Custom dimensions — no standard template
  • Pricing quoted after on-site visit
  • 1-year workmanship warranty

When do you need this kit?

Floating staircase

Open-riser treads

No riser board between steps. The tread face, both ends, and often the underside edge are visible. Requires a thick, fully-wrapped tread or block.

Modern renovation

Cantilevered treads

Treads that appear to float from a wall or structural spine. The free-hanging end needs to be finished on all sides — front face, underside, and tip.

Non-standard

Winder or pie stairs

Tapered treads in curved or L-shaped staircases require custom cutting to fit non-rectangular shapes. Each tread is measured and cut individually.

How this works — floating stairs process

1
Request a free consult

Call, text, or use the estimate form. Describe your staircase — floating, winder, or open-riser — and Victor will confirm whether this kit fits your project.

2
On-site measurement visit

FIR measures each tread in place — dimensions, exposed edges, attachment points. This visit is necessary for floating stairs because standard dimensions don't apply.

3
Quote and material confirmation

You receive a firm quote based on the actual measurements. You confirm and bring your planks to the shop (or we source the material with your approval).

4
Fabrication in 3–5 days

Your custom pieces are fabricated and ready for pickup or local delivery. Installation can be included in the quote.

Floating stair nosing — common questions

Standard kits are designed for stairs where the tread is supported on both ends by a stringer or wall. Floating treads are exposed on more surfaces and require thicker material and full-wrap fabrication. There's also no standard template to follow — every floating staircase has different dimensions, attachment points, and exposed surfaces.
Solid hardwood and engineered hardwood are the most common for floating treads because they provide the structural thickness needed (typically 1.5″ to 2.5″ for cantilevered applications). LVP can work for some open-tread configurations where the tread is structurally supported and only the nosing needs wrapping. FIR will advise on material suitability at the on-site visit.
Both options are available for floating stairs. Installation is more commonly included for floating stairs than for standard boxed kits, because the attachment details require more precision. We can quote fabrication-only or fabrication + installation at the on-site visit.
Yes. If the original tread material is available (same brand, product, dye lot), we can match it. If you have leftover planks from the original installation, those are the best starting point. If no planks are available, we may be able to source a close match — confirmed at the on-site visit with a sample comparison.
