The return cap is a small piece cut from your plank material that wraps around the exposed right end of the nose piece. It's mitered at 45° so the corner is seamless — no raw edge, no end grain visible from the front or the side. The result looks like one continuous piece wrapping around the step edge.
Every step that has an exposed right side needs a return cap. If your staircase transitions from open (exposed) to closed (against a wall) partway up, only the open steps need returns. FIR identifies which steps need returns during your order review.
